When you spend all day rolling 45kg gas cylinders on and off the back of a truck and your only reprieve is the driver’s seat, the cabin refinements of your vehicle can mean the difference between a good trip and one relegated to the ‘don’t ask’ pile.

Tim Donegan, a 20-year trucking veteran and part owner of Kyneton-based Donegan Transport has experienced his share of hard days on the road, but says the increasing comfort of modern vehicles is making a big difference to the lives of truckies around Australia.

Tim says Donegan Transport’s recent acquisition of an Isuzu Giga CXY 455 Premium is a perfect case-in-point.

“Being the first heavy duty Isuzu we’ve purchased, we certainly haven’t been disappointed with the Giga,” Tim said.

“Our drivers are doing manual labour all day, loading and unloading the trucks, so the Giga’s automated manual transmission (AMT) has made it easier on them when they get back behind the wheel.

“The Giga also comes with a bed, so it’s no problem if you get caught somewhere overnight. And it has a good turning circle so it’s easier for our drivers to get in and out of yards and tight spaces when they need to.

“Basically, comfort is a major consideration when you’re in a truck all day, and that’s what the Giga delivers in spades.”

Donegan Transport’s new Giga CXY 455 Premium hauls a large capacity load of around 260 gas bottles in its 7.5 metre custom-made tray.

Donegan Transport operates a fleet of 11 trucks out of Kyneton and Maryborough, with the newly-acquired Giga CXY 455 Premium just one of five Isuzus at work in this family business.

Tim Donegan says Isuzus make up about half the Donegan Transport fleet because they live up to their reputation for reliability, quality and after-sales care.

“With Isuzu it all adds up at the end of the day. Even the older models are still going strong and they have the horsepower to do the job so we don’t have to work them hard,” Tim said.

The Giga CXY 455 Premium is powered by a 338kW, 15-litre engine producing 2,255 Nm of torque at 1,300 RPM.

Cabin features include driver airbag, ECE-R29 cab strength compliance and an ISRI 6860 air suspended driver’s seat with integrated seatbelt.

The Giga’s touchscreen audio-visual system gives operators integrated sat-nav, memory card slot for music and/or mapping, MP3 input, Bluetooth and optional external cameras.

And a separate Multi-Information Display shows fuel consumption, speed warnings, engine hours, service intervals and more.

Isuzu Trucks has continued its extraordinary run as Australian truck market leader after recording its 23rd consecutive year atop the sales charts at the end of 2011.

Official T-mark industry reports reveal Isuzu Trucks finished 2011 with a total of 6617 units sold and a market share of almost 24 per cent – 3283 units and 11.8 per cent share ahead of its nearest competitor.

Isuzu dominated the light duty segment finishing with 37.6 per cent share and 3,320 units, more than the combined market share and volume of the second and third-placed manufacturers.

Isuzu also comfortably lead medium duty truck sales with 40.7 per cent market share for a total of 2553 units. This performance left Isuzu over 17 per cent clear of its closest competitor in terms of market share along with a volume buffer of 1072 units.

The brand also performed admirably in the heavy duty market – its 7.9 per cent market share and volume of 744 units confirmed Isuzu’s position as Australia’s favourite heavy duty Japanese manufacturer.

Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) Director and Chief Operating Officer, Phil Taylor, said the brand had remained resilient despite last year’s demanding business conditions and the impact of natural disasters in Japan.

“Given the challenges of 2011, we are very pleased with the outcome,” Mr Taylor said.

“The combination of a challenging business environment coupled with the flooding in Queensland and Japanese natural disasters – which subsequently affected vehicle production – made for an extremely demanding year.

“Given this, IAL greatly appreciates the support and patience of all our loyal customers in 2011, especially any that may have been inconvenienced.”

Mr Taylor said that Isuzu was positive about the year ahead.

“Our business analysts predict upwards of four per cent growth in the truck market this year,” he said.

“While this will still leave the industry and broader economy some way off buoyant pre GFC levels, it will nonetheless provide a positive trend for a gradual return to stronger growth in the medium to longer term.”

Airpower NT has come a long way since beginning life as an offset from Tristar Engineering, a engineering and manufacturer of transport equipment, that assisted in the rebuild necessitated by the devastating Cyclone Tracy. Managed and operated by a formidable business partnership between Peter Rau and Bernie Ostermeyer, Airpower came into its own run solely by Rau in 1988.

Peter’s eldest son, Grant, took the reigns in 2005, and being an old hand in the automotive industry (an ex-truck driver, automotive body builder and boilermaker) Grant easily found his feet in the top job as Managing Director.

Carrying major brands such as ISUZU, Iveco, Kubota and Bobcat, and offering vehicle and machinery servicing and parts, Airpower has been pivotal in supporting the Territory’s transport, mining, construction and agricultural industries, with loyal customers including NT Fleet, Kennards Hire, McArthur River Mine and the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Service.

38 years on, 2012 holds plenty of promise for this long-running local business, and a new management team is the driving force behind the planned changes. Drawing on the talents of local and international recruits with over 130 years of knowledge and experience in the industry, Airpower is serious about maintaining its position as an industry leader and employs the best in the business in order to be the best in the business.

Currently undergoing ISO9001 Certification, the company will be able to service a whole new caliber of client, with their sights set on the major players in the government and mining sectors. Obtaining accreditation means great things for Airpower’s customers, as the company will offer a higher level of quality assurance and service standard, which means the customer will receive a better product or service; guaranteed.

Grant is optimistic about upcoming major projects in the Territory, such as the Ichthys gas project, increases in number of defense troops in Darwin, expansion of East Arm Wharf and of the development Marine Supply Base, commenting, “It’s an exciting time to be part of local industry in the NT. I grew up here and raised my family in Darwin and Alice Springs and the change I have seen and will continue to see over the next five to ten years is truly exciting”.

Facilities at their Darwin branch recently have been and will continue to be upgraded, making the site more comfortable for customers, and paving the way to Airpower becoming a more environmentally sustainable operation. These improvements also provide a safer workplace for their valued employee base, which has just been increased by an intake of four first-year apprentices, reinforcing Airpower’s commitment to training and development for young Territorians.

Before its official establishment in 1926, the Northern Territory Fire & Rescue Service (NTFRS) was known as the ‘bucket brigade’; a volunteer fire service, which protected buildings, homes and property.

Today NTFRS has over 40 Isuzu trucks. These include models from the latest ranges, an NQR 450 and FTR 900 to much earlier examples, all of which are specially fitted out as tankers, rescue vehicles and hazardous material clean-up units.

Tankers and rescue trucks carry a variety of gear onboard depending on the main purpose of the vehicle. Equipment can range from rubber and canvas hoses to knapsack sprays and hand tools, fire fighting foam, breathing apparatus, chainsaws and hydraulic rescue tools, global positioning systems, GRN and VHF radios, rescue stretchers, generators, lighting equipment, and of course pumps and water tanks.

ISUZU is key to the NTFRS's operations

Isuzu has worked with the NTFRS for more than two decades. This long and successful partnership has been based on Isuzu’s reputation for reliability and strong performance, according to Jock McLeod, Senior Station Officer based in Darwin.

“We have a fleet of Isuzu trucks which date from 1994 to the current range; despite some models being more than 10 years old their performance is still extremely good,” he said.

“There is an Isuzu truck in every major fire station in the Northern Territory and the reason for that is the fact that Isuzu trucks are reliable,” Jock said.

The latest acquisition is an Isuzu FTR 900 crew cab fitted with the automated manual transmission, specified as a fire truck. Jock is always the first to drive any of the new trucks.

“I have driven every new truck in our fleet from the bodybuilder in Ballarat, Victoria to fire stations in the Northern Territory,” he said.

“The latest trucks are like driving a Commodore. The seats for the drivers are excellent … things are easy to reach and read.”

He also added that the feedback from the drivers was very good.

“The NTFRS only has 165 permanent staff, including support and administrative officers,” Jock said.

“Most of the front line work of keeping our territory’s residents safe from bush, industrial and domestic fires is carried out by around 250 volunteer fire fighters and 54 part-time staff.

“In remote areas, volunteer fire fighters are the backbone of our organisation, as they are often called to assist professional fire fighters in rescue, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters and fires.”

The responsibility of keeping 1.35 million square kilometres of country safe is huge and there is no margin for error and or an errant truck. Reliability is very important in emergency services work particularly when there is a large geographic area to be covered and a wide range of services to provide.

NTFRS’ Isuzus in service must attend all types of rescues including road accidents, chemical spills, industrial accidents, structure fires, as well as grass and bush fires. These can be in diverse locations extending from the northern reaches of the Tiwi Islands to the southern deserts.

“On average a truck might only do about 3000 kilometres per year, but when we need them, we want them there, so reliability is a must, there are no second chances for a fire truck,” Jock said.

You’ll be mow-tivated to take on your wet season mowing with a Kubota Z-Series zero-turn lawn mower!

Available in petrol and diesel models, the Z-Series range of zero-turn mowers can take on any residential or commercial mowing challenge, ranging from the compact ZG200 mowers through to mighty ZD300 models.

Featuring high performance shaft driven integral type twin hydrostatic transmissions and hydraulic PTO clutches, as well as hands free operations of both the hydraulic deck lift and parking brake, Kubota zero turn mowers are designed and built to handle a wide range of mowing tasks.

Kubota’s mower decks are deeper for exceptional cutting performance, while the reliable hydrostatic transmission ensures ultra-smooth performance and durability. The commercial operator or large property owner’s dream, Kubota’s fuel efficient heavy duty diesel mowers feature a large fuel tank and supersized radiator, perfect for working long days in the Top End heat.

The Z-Series range has been built with comfort in mind, and features ample leg room, an uncluttered floor area and wide deck, which means the operator get’s more out of the work day and avoids the aches and pains typically associated with spending a day mowing.

Design master-minds have made maintenance easy with a seat panel that lifts up for quick access to the hydrostatic transmission and a hood that opens for routine engine maintenance. The deck maintenance jacking system makes routine mower deck maintenance simple.

Kubota takes great pride in building quality, reliable machines that are built to last, and are prepared to back up their product with a 24 month/1,500 hour warranty.
